In this first of a two-part series, we’ve got some tips for making sure that your LinkedIn profile stands out from the crowd and gets you the attention you deserve. In today’s highly competitive job market you have to have more than an impressive resume. Employers have more resources than ever at their fingertips for researching potential candidates and your social media presence and connections can paint a much bigger picture of who you are and what you offer than what you put on paper. Tools like LinkedIn can work to your advantage and give you an edge over the competition---or the can put you out of the running before you’re even in the race.

A Picture is Worth 1,000 Words

Always upload a photo but remember that this isn’t Facebook or Snapchat so save the selfies and forgo the filters in favor of a professional (or professional looking) headshot.

Get Their Attention

Just like a newspaper headline your LinkedIn profile headline should entice people to want to read more. With thousands of people in a field, you need to shine so make sure you include anything that makes you stand out from the rest. For example, if you are an “award winning” journalist—say so! If you have a unique niche in your field make sure you mention it. The more specific you are, the more you set yourself apart.

Use Your Own Voice

Your summary is your chance to shine and let both employers and potential clients get a feel for your personality. While you want to include your work history, experience, awards and interests, you should present these items in a way that engages the reader as opposed to simply copying and pasting your resume. Also, experts recommend writing in the first person to keep the tone conversational.

Edit Your Experience

If you are applying for a job in the finance industry, there is no need to include that high school summer you spent waiting tables. Focus on the job experience that best speaks to the career field you are interested in, and highlight your strengths as they pertain to that field.

These are just a few basics to get you on your way to a profile that will get people talking. In part two, we will talk about other features including blogging, networking, adding endorsements and other strategic ways to add value to your profile and get the most from your LinkedIn experience.
